MediterAsian Lifestyle: It's not a diet

With a mountains of evidence, countless health and medical professors praising it, and universities from all corners of the world proving it, oh and of course the people of these areas living longer and healthier than all the rest, the MediterAsian Diet is hands down the healthiest and the tastiest.

Why don't I know about this diet?

The sad truth? There's no supplements to sell with it.

No lotions. No potions. No powders or pills.

 There's really no good way to monetize on it, and if you can't monetize on it, the "guru's" don't like it!

Let's be honest. It's cooler to be trendy, and have a bunch of products to sell with a diet. It's also cooler to be able to throw out things like "this study or that study", and appear like you're in the know. But I prefer to look at the facts going back countless generations AND backed by science. And those say the diets and lifestyle of both the Mediterranean and Asia are just better period.

We are a Wonderbread Culture

I came to the realization that the world see's us, (and quite rightfully), as a bland, mundane, and boring "wonderbread culture" and I did not want to be part of this. 

Spice are amazing! And they don't have to be hot!

Ginger is a spice. Cinnamon is a spice. Tumeric is a spice. 

Then of course we have so many fresh herbs to use as well.

 

And they all provide so many health benefits; from boosting metabolism, to decreasing inflammation, to improving cognition to improving circulation and lowering blood sugar, and the list goes on and on...

The Science of the MediterrAsian Diet?

 

German scientists from the University of Kiel found that combining Mediterranean and Asian diets can have a very positive effect on your DNA. This is due to the fact that traditional Mediterranean and Asian foods — such as olive oil, chilies, herbs, red wine, pandan leaf, turmeric and matcha — are rich in natural anti-inflammatory plant compounds such as polyphenols. Polyphenols activate a type of gene in the body called sirtuins, which play a fundamental role in extending cellular life and repairing DNA.

Compared to severe calorie restriction (which is also known to activate sirtuins), the researchers found that a polyphenol-rich MediterrAsian diet provided similar health benefits — except minus the having to restrict calories. Their research was published in the scientific journal Oxidative Medicine and Cellular Longevity in 2013.

 

“We suggest that a MediterrAsian diet combining sirtuin-activating foods of the Asian as well as Mediterranean diet may be a promising dietary strategy in preventing chronic diseases, thereby ensuring health and healthy aging."

Interestingly The University of Arizona College of Medicine even has an accredited course for physicians & dietitians which focuses on combining traditional Mediterranean and Asian eating practices for the health boosting benefits it has.

BlueZones?

By now, you may have heard of the "BlueZones", geographical areas of the world where both the average Lifespan (longevity, i.e. how long we live) and the average Healthspan (how long we stay healthy for) are dramatically above the rest of the world.

 

Well, what kind of diet do you think they follow?

 

Is it a coincidence that the majority of them are in Asia (Japan) and the Mediterranean (Greece and Italy), and that ALL of them basically follow the very similar nutritional guidelines? A focus on plants, whole foods, low refined sugars or junk foods, and moderate alcohol, I don't think so. Even France with its high amounts of breads and wine have lower levels of chronic heart disease than the west.

But it's not just about the food. It's about the experience​!

We have left the idea of enjoying our meals behind.

The preparation. The flavours. The textures.  

And of course the social aspects.

In traditional cultures foods are shared, savoured and enjoyed slowly.

In the west we mash it down, gulp it down, and rush through, with no mindfulness to what we are eating.
