Be Mindful, Reflective, Clear and Focused

Stress is a huge part of our lives. In fact some medical experts have said that up to 80% of doctor and hospital visits are related directly or indirectly to stress.

We have created a culture where we only want to go-go-go. We think the solution to weight loss or stress is adding more stress through physical means, CrossFit, HIIT, intense training, hitting the treadmill hard for hours, spending 1-2 hours in the gym, sweating and pounding away.

 

But the opposite is true. This is just adding to our stress.

 

The real secret is taking some purposeful down time, slowing down, focusing on de-stressing, breathing, being mindful and aware of our mental states.  

This can be dome in many ways; meditation, Qigong, TaiChi, Ruesi-Datton, watching a sunset, unplugging, and even taking a simple walk in the great outdoors. 

We must also be aware of our thoughts, and watch for those that can bring us down; comparisons, self-inflicted competitions we create with others, and lacking the awareness to be grateful for the things we have in our lives. 

Simple ways to improve mindfulness each day.

  • Learn a meditation

  • Learn to belly breathe

  • Do yoga for yoga sake

  • Take morning or evening walks

  • Read a book

  • Watch a sunset

  • Brew coffee in a slow manner. Brew a tea.

  • Get a lite massage

  • Have a gratitude board

  • Journal

  • Use chopsticks. Count bites.

  • Garden

  • Create a Zen Zone and use it daily. 

  • Try a sauna

  • Try a sensory deprivation tank.

  • Listen to relaxing music

  • Watch a fountain or fish tank

  • Try grounding/earthing

  • Try hiking

  • Try Shinrun-Yoku (forest bathing)

  • Look through family scrap books. 

  • Get a relaxing hobby

  • Play an instrument

  • Learn a breathing practice

Zen Zone Ideas

Zen isn't about prayer, it's about finding YOUR peace. Whether through meditation, music, literature, art, contemplation, writing, nature focus, or prayer. It's what makes you feel at peace. And you may as well accessorize it a bit too.
